What does Compulsory Motor Insurance cover?

The Compulsory Motor Insurance, or “Por Ror Bor” is an insurance type that is required by law for all motor vehicle types in Thailand. This would include all cars, motorcycles, motorbikes or any other motor vehicles driving on roads. It ensures insurance protection for anyone involved in any form of a car accident whether they be a pedestrian, a driver or a passenger. Whether there is some damage to vehicles, bodily injury or death, this insurance provides basic protection for any of these scenarios. Compulsory car insurance coverage is significantly limited in its financial sum of protection when compared to any voluntary car insurance in Thailand. Because all vehicles are required by law to have this insurance type and renew it every year prior to paying the car tax, all drivers in Thailand will purchase this insurance in order to avoid a 10,000 THB fee. However, most car drivers will also purchase an additional voluntary insurance type in order to provide the additional protection and higher financial sum of protection.

+ What is the difference between Type 2 and Type 2+ vehicle insurance?

This will depend on the insurer that you choose, but generally the high sum insured of Type 2+ coverage is much higher than Type 2 auto insurance. Additionally, Type 2+ will provide more protection for damages to your vehicle from a collision with a third party. Type 2 however, is much more limited in protecting your vehicle from car accidents with a third party and does not include any flood damage protection which may be quite necessary if your vehicle is not parked in a secured parking garage or elevated area.

+ What is the difference between Type 3 and Type 3+ vehicle insurance?

This will depend on the insurer that you choose, but generally car insurance Type 3+ offers coverage to your vehicle from a car accident with a third party while Type 3 will only cover damages to a third party vehicle and liability to third party for any bodily harm or death. Most insurers will also provide 24/7 towing service with Type 3+ insurance policy and the ability to add excess insurance, whereas this options do not exist for Type 3 insurance

+ What is the difference between Type 2+ and Type 3+ vehicle insurance?

This will depend on the insurer that you choose, but generally car insurance Type 2+ and Type 3+ will both offer coverage to your vehicle from a car accident with a third party, damages to a third party vehicle and liability to third party for any bodily harm or death. However, only Type 2+ will provide additional coverage for car fire, theft and flood damage while Type 3+ does not include this additional coverage.

+ Which car insurance Type will cover flood damage better?

Considering how much it rains in Thailand, most insurers include flood damage and similar natural disaster coverage in their insurance policies. Type 1 and Type 2 + will provide you with protection from flood damage, however the financial amount of insurance coverage will differ much more significantly between these two insurance types and the insurance company you decide to choose.

+ Which car insurance Type will cover car breakdown or damage better?

With most companies, all motor insurance types except for Type 3 should provide some protection for your vehicle from damages by a third party or natural disasters, however the limits of liability on each type is very different.

+ Which car insurance Type will provide 24/7 towing service?

This largely depends on your insurer but generally Type 1, Type 2+ and Type 3+ will offer towing service as part of your insurance policy or as an add on.

+ Which car insurance Type will provide protection from fire damage or car theft?

This largely depends on your insurer but generally Type 1, Type 2+ and Type 2 will offer insurance coverage for fire damage and car theft.

+ Which car insurance Type has the option of installment payments for the insurance premium?

This does not depend on your insurance type as much as it depends on the insurer that you choose for your vehicle. Most big brands offer car insurance payments through installments, even Mr.Kumka has an option for you to pay for your insurance premium through fixed installments by debit card, credit card or bank transfer.

+ Which auto insurance Type will include roadside assistance?

Usually, most insurers provide emergency roadside assistance as an add on to your insurance policy as this is considered a separate insurance product. However, Type 1, Type 2+ and Type 3+ should all be able to offer 24/7 car towing service in addition to surveyors arriving to the accident scene to help you process your insurance claim.

+ What is Excess Insurance?

Some insurance companies will have the option to add on excess insurance which is a form of additional coverage that in the long term helps to keep your premium lower and reduce the amount of insurance claims where you are at fault. If you purchase an insurance policy and request to have an ‘x’ amount of excess added to your policy, when you have a car accident and you are at fault, you do not need to make a claim if the cost of car repairs is below the ‘x’ amount listed in your policy. You will pay for the cost of repairs yourself and avoid adding a claim to your claim history while retaining your good driver history. However, if the cost of repairs is above the ‘x’ amount listed in your excess insurance policy, you will need to make a claim with your insurance company. In such a case, you will still pay the ‘x’ amount listed in your policy and your insurer will pay the remaining amount from the cost of car repairs. If you have an accident with a third party and you are not at fault, you do not need to pay anything and your excess does not apply in such a scenario. Overall, we recommend everyone to request excess added to their policy as it will help you to lower the number of car insurance claims in your history and in the long term, help to keep your premium lower.

+ What is a car repair garage option or garage plan?

Some insurers provide the option to repair your vehicle at one of their partner garages in the event that you have a road accident. In choosing this option, you may be able to get a lower premium from your insurance company based on their policy and extent of their repair garage networks.

+ What is a driver option or driver plan?

This option allows you to add additional drivers to your insurance policy in the event that you are not the only person that may drive your car. This provides additional protection to your vehicle in the event that your vehicle is involved in a car collision, the additional driver option would provide insurance coverage whether it was you driving the vehicle, an additional driver or any driver that you decided to add to your policy. Check with your insurance provider as some are more relaxed about additional drivers while others may not be.
